: I've heard a lot of Bimmer owners talk about the Red Line synthetic gear oil for their manual tannys. Would Mobile One gear oil be just as good?

Well, I've used both Redline MTL and Mobil 1 synthetic in a E12 tranny.

One car I purchased had MTL in the tranny when I first got it. It shifted fine but I though I could hear some
bearing noise. So I switched to Mobile 1 synth gear oil. It still shifted fine afterward and the faint noise didn't go away either.
So I left the mobil 1 in there. No problems to report, still works fine.

I did notice that when it's cold < 30 deg F, the tranny is a little harder to shift than w/MTL -- but that's about it.

I think MTL is really useful for worn syncros (like my 68 2002 has on 2nd gear) but for a tranny in good shape? Any decent synth oil will work fine.
