I'll answer your last question first. The L-Jet, whether for the 530i or 528i is analog, not digital, so you can't just get a new chip and plug it in. However, you can tweak the fuel flow by increasing fuel pressure or by adjusting the air flow meter. But the 530i already runs rich.

For the power question: Most cost-effective route to power is to clean up the exhaust--discard the thermao reactor. Cheapest/simplest would be to swap in the whole exhaust from E28 533i or 535i--the whole thing from exhaust manifold to muffler. For more (hp and $$) you can get a header and whole performance exhaust for the same car from someplace like BMP (see their ad in Roundel).

That assumes your engine is in good shape. If not, for the cost of a rebuild you can get a late model used 535i engine. The extra torque from the extra cc's really kicks (but make sure the differential mount is solid)
