I did some research on this when replacing my master recently, and a lot of people recommend using the larger (25mm) v. the standard 22mm diameter master The 25s were on the 7 series (E23, IIRC). They both have the same line/hose fittings. Only the master cylinder bore is different.

A lot of E24 and E28 people seem to recommend the same thing: upgrade to an E12 master cylinder if possible, although some plugs need to be used to accommodate brake lines on these other models.

The benefit is that the 25mm master pumps more juice, although it requires higher pedal pressures. I believe you can go as high as 27mm.
