Robert,
I to had found this problem, that there are two differenet sizes of struts for the E12. When I was getting the old struts done on my car I borrowed a mates inserts from his 76 520 and they didnt fit my car. I ended up using his whole front strut assembly. I cant tell you what the numbers for the different struts are though sorry.
