I'd check the trans oil level _right_away_ and top up if necessary. As soon as possible, do an oil drain, drop the pan, change the screen filter and clean the magnet. Complete kits for the 3HP-22 cost $20 or maybe less. They include gasket and filter screen. You'll need a set of hex wrenches to get at the drain plug, pan and internals.

But in the short term, a quart of Dexron III may solve your problems. Hopefully your trans will survive. A boneyard trans is probably cheap, but the labour to put it in isn't [methinks].
