I had the same thing happen to my 1980 last week. I noticed a loud alternator whine coming through my radio and as I was pulling into a parking space I lost all power - not a stall, but like the battery was disconnected (wouldn't crank, no lights, no accessories, etc.) I let it sit for a minute or so, and it turned over just fine. My mechanic found nothing wrong with any of the electric components. He then reset the idle speed solinoid and slightly advanced the timing. Since then, no problem.
