: Thanks for the response and yes - I am very aware of the output of the turbo era F1 engines. No history lesson necessary here.
I can certainly see why some of these high-tech, high HP cars have sponsers. One thing that I lack
is the capital to test my car's total limit. Boost comes on crisp and if nailed, the entire front end lifts and
then you're pegged so hard against the back of the seat that it scares the hell out of you and you have to let
off. My speedo is numbered to 220mph and the needle flings past 100mph into those "outer" ranges, blurry and full of whine
from the screaming turbo. From a dead start, under load with turbo scorching, pop the clutch and now I need two rear axles! Testing
this thing is costing some money. But the overall impression is sheer delight.
As far as reliability, I don't use this car to go to work, so I can't say for sure how reliable it is in a daily situation. Off boost,
it's rather sneaky, sudden and insane, I built it this way. It really depends on the Fuel/Ignition Maps. The integrating of three computers
makes for a reliable explosion of power. Most systems retard the timing or pulse the boost selonoid. My system, instead of taking
away it adds! But in a general sort of way, the radio sounds nice and the AC is cold and the cruising is smooth and simple. Technoloy is the best bet
for a successful turbo motor. And I'm sure that, perhaps someday, using methanol and race gas, I'll again hold her tight on the local Dyno; and I'm sure
that the numbers will be quite impressive. (Initial tuning on the last turbo showed a blip into the 600HP range. With a newer turbo now, I'll have to wait
until I receive my new axles)
But this issue of turbocharging and into these ranges is quite common today. As far as using a puffer on a track car,
I'd consider using an Aerodyne. This unit requires no oil feed nor does it require a wastegate. It's a peaky little thing,
perfect for the track. Boost comes on as low as 2000 rpm. So you can solve this 80's "lag" issue. I'm sure Nelson would be happy :o)
ery high boost, a very short power curve they were all (Honda, Renault, Ferrari) getting some very impressive HP numbers. It came down to who was the most reliable. I believe Renault was doing it with an iron production based block, like BMW.
: The folks that refered to the 450 hp limit for the 3.5L were talking about the supercharger limit, not the BMW engine.
: What kind of numbers is your 4L Turbo making? Please share any drivablity issues you have had. I am looking to have a very good road course car, not just a quarter mile special. Any insight you could share would be appreciated.
