You can use the '88 trans, but it has no speedo drive in it. I've heard that you can add one but don't know how and haven't spoken to anyone who has done it.
I have spoken to Jim Blanton once about this. he told me he used a trans similar to the '88 trans in his E12 and installed an electronic speedo in the instrument panel. Then he rigged up an electronic speedo drive using some Metric Mechanic parts. He's happy with it.
