playing with timing

All,
How far can one mess with it before i have to start worrying about hurting the car. Can I really use the seat dyno and set the car up to suit me better. Im not digging my low speed performance. The car takes off for the hills above 3 grand but is boggy and ever so slightly hunts while under a load with a light foot on the gas. Im looking to smooth out the minor hobby horsing the car seems to do at low speed and get a tad more pop too. Matty 76 530i w/bavarias
