Been playing with timing as well. Factory spec, 22 @ 1700RPM was not aggressive enough so I bumped it over the course of time to 28 degrees. Much peppier and no ping + running regular (87 octane) gas.
Not advocating you go this route just letting you know what another fellow e12er has gotten "away" with.
