Since you are getting a backfire, perhaps finding the symptoms and fixes that related to this plenum-splitting situation may be helpful. I was not aware of the actual problem, but some on the board here knew of the reason for the weld bead on my plenum.
Sorry, can't be more helpful, but this might offer a start. This was apparently an early e12 problem.
