Curious problem...

O.K. here's the deal, it just started:

If I accelerate up to 4500 RPMs the tach IMMEDIATELY *dives* to 0 and the engine shuts down (like fuel). If I decelerate the tach jumps back up to the correct RPM and the engine runs fine.
WTF?

The engine otherwise starts, warms up and runs faithfully very good.

Where should I start to look?

Only original components left:

Coil
Dizzy (although impulse transmitter has been replaced)
Main fuel pump

Before I go tearing into the dist. (I might suspect the ground wire) any clues as to what else might be suspect?

'80 528i (5 speed)
