I know what you mean about E12 parts eventually going NLA.
I replaced the hood on my M535i last fall. I wanted an original new BMW steel hood/bonnet so it was ordered through the local BMW dealer. There were 12 in Germany when I placed my order. Five of them were destroyed to damage in shipping to the US. It took over 2 months just to get one good part. At the end they were shipping 2 at a time just so one might show up good.
Guess now there are only 6 left in the world....
