As I've been a learning sponge regarding older BMW tunning, I recalled I read somewhre regarding this. I took the time to trace it and here it is...
The BMW Power web site has a section on Sevens (brief history). There it talks about in 1983 "an improvement was the 4HP22 tranny... Read it for yourself.
I'm not saying it's a straight bolt on to our beloved FIVES, I just pointing what could be one of various sources for the 4HP22. I will incline that it could fit, since basically the platform (length) are similar. It is the body of the seven that are bigger... Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
