Here's my educated guess about how to do the conversion from 3hp22 to 4hp22.
First find a good 4hp22. They were used in 5,6,7 series in the eighties and early nineties. You could get a 4hp22 from a 88 535i and I'm *pretty sure* that the driveshaft and all will fit.
Next install an E28 speedo in your instrument panel. Jim Blanton told me that he has done this to his E12 so he can use a Getrag 280.
Then, the special speedo drive from Metric Mechanic, install it, and hook it up to the new speedo.
