Take your time, the cars are out there. Make sure you get the 5-speed with the overdrive fifth gear (not a 530i unless it's converted) unless you prefer an automatic. Mileage is not as important as maintenance. I've got a 77 530i with 264000 miles on it that passed California Vehicle Inspection with flying colors. Of course, this is after replacing over $500 worth of rubber parts and whatnot. Also have an 85 535i with 338,000!! that passed smog no problem and runs quite well. Should be good for many more miles. No matter what car youy get or what you pay, count on spending some time and money taking care of your car. The rubber parts don't last forever.
