'78 and earlier cars did not have an in-tank pump. The pump in those cars is different, but they might work anyway. I don't know.
The '81 and later E23 has the same pump and the '79-'81 528i. Also, I just checked. The E28 pump is the same as the later E12 pump and is used in all E28s including the 528e all the way up to '88. The beauty of this is that you could get a much younger pump.
BTW, I'm still in shock that my car ('79 528i) is still running on the original fuel pumps: the one in the tank and the main pump! I can hear a bit of noise from the in-tank pump when the level is below 1/4 tank, but other than that, it's going strong.
