cleaning the screen on the in tank pump will alleviate that whirring noise.
I just replaced my original in tank pump this past spring after reading that noise around and below 1/4 tank indicates a dead pump. Mine was and the car still ran fine. Replacing it eliminated the noise.
I,too, am still running my original main pump at 218k! (which, of course, will now fail tomorrow ;-)
