I'm with you on originality, but as a driver that was rear ended 2 years ago in my 3.0CSi, with a resulting 50% loss of neck movement, all I can say is that commonsense MUST prevail.
Having said that, a third brake light maybe wouldn't have helped me,as the offending driver was busy with a bottle of VB (a brand of beer) at the time.
