More and more Timing

I have been tinkering with my disributor timing for some months and i cant seem to find a happy spot for it.....currently i have it a a spot where it pings, but only a little and only at about 3000 maybe.... if i move it clockwise (is the ADvancing or Retarding?) maybe a millimeter, it stops pinging, but i get a sever loss of power....No fun...Any suggestions?
