If you move it clockwise and it stops pinging, you are retarding it. Make sure your vacuum retard is hooked up and working, that makes a difference in driveablity. And what grade gas are you running? Even with the low 8.2 compression of my 528i I ran mid grade gas because I bumped up the advance. Are you sure you are just moving it a MM? Backing off on timing will get you less power, actually torque, (I don't think HP is really improved by more advance, but torque is), but if it is just pinging a little bit, a couple of degrees shouldn't make a dramatic difference. One more thing, check and make sure the centrifugal advance seems like it is working right, take the cap off and twist the rotor and it should have a spring action to it, that is your advance. I have heard of it getting tricky if one cent. weight spring breaks, it is hard to troubleshoot, but may have symptoms like yours. But I think it is a high mileage thing, how many miles does yours have on it? If it is under 200k I would think it very unlikly, but hard to tell from here.
Keep after it, it will be worth it when it's right.
