I'd guess the E12's didn't sell in the US in huge numbers (compared to American iron back then, and compared to how many BMW's BMW NA is moving in the US these days) so there can only be so many out there. I'd say with the E28's, BMW NA was starting to hit it's stride. I still see some on the road in Chicago, of course they're rusty and mostly 528e's. I never see E12's around here.
