I've had fuel pressure regulators fail high when it is cold and cause flooding in same conditions. Since it does better with it disconnected it looks like a rich problem. A way to get it started if it gets real bad is to unplug the ECU in the glove compartment, then try and start it briefly. If it is badly flooded it will fire and run for a few seconds, then die. That's ok, it just burned off the excess fuel and warmed up the plugs and combustion chamber a little bit. Plug it back in and you should be good to go, it should start right up.
