Since you know the circuit is good up to the alternator, but the dash light doesn't come on when it is hooked up to the alternator, it suggest strongly to me that it is the regulator. They are cheap (online at least, $15 or less) and very easy to change. It could be the alt, but I think it is more likely to be the regulator, which is much cheaper and easier to change.
