For the 528i / M535i where the exhaust exits the centre of the rear valance, BMW supply a special tow-hitch - which is made by Westfalia.
You can still buy this through BMW here in Germany for slightly less than 500,- DM ($280 or so).
Note that the electrical fitting "kit" is no longer available but the various cables and relay are available individually.
You may be able to get the hitch from Westfalia still - although I doubt it would be cheaper than from BMW.
