the inside covers may be there to help you unplug the harness before unscrewing the retainer rings. In the off chance the lense pops out and yanks the harness or something. I like to have it on so that if I let go of the light I don't drop the headlight on the ground. I have never taken of the covers to do a change out. Same on my 82'320i
