I have changed the seats out front and back from an e28 into both a 1980 and 1981 and the seats and the seats interchange perfectly, so the carpet under the back seat must be the same and the bolt holes for the brackets and seat belts for front seats are the same. If there is an issue on the carpet, it might be at the section between the console and the parking brake. I can't remember whether my e28 was a continuous console between those two places. If so, perhaps the carpet has a cut there which would be exposed on the e12. I do know the power window switches are on the console in the e28, but I don't think that affects carpeting in a place that shows.
