We've talked about this before and one E28 guy posted a whole tutorial on how to do a dash swap complete w/ pictures. You also need the electronic speedo pickup on the trans, and they never work anyway, so don't bother. You will also add several thousand _miles_ of wire to your car.
It would be easier/cheaper to find an E12/8 in UK/Sth Africa/Australia and import it. In fact, someone in Sydney is selling one right now (see ad above).
And they are slightly rarer than an M535i (at least in 528i form), as a fine point of interest
