any M30 3.5L motor can be used if you're willing to buy the cam repair nut (for your version engine) and use your old front timing cover and distributer. The nut provides the dist drive on the motronic cam which lacks the correct drive ears.
The motors from e32 and e34 are the hottest US motors. Karl K has one with Ljet on it
If you can, get motors from automatics as they don't get the crank thrust wear like manual transmission versions do.
I always start my e12 in neutral to avoid this problem.
