As Peter said, I used an engine from e34 car ('89 535i). The later series engines have larger valves and higher compression. Everything from the old engine bolted right up--from the oil pump pickup to thermostat housing to heater hose connectors. Original intake and exhaust fit also, but I got e34 exhaust manifold and down pipes to dual catalytic converters which let the engine rev pretty well.
