IIRC, it has small metal tabs that are bent over to secure it in place. You straighten them out, and there are two per location, one bent up and one bent down, and it pulls straight out.
As Brian mentioned, the original finish is pretty tough, I had to use epoxy remover to remove the original when I did mine. Regular paint remover wouldn't even touch it.
