I just looked at my 77 530i 4 speed transmission. The 6mm allen bolt on the top of the transmission just over the selector shaft was "tight" -- it took a little effort to brake loose using a std long hex key. I did not remove it.
BTW I know that this allen bolt had never been loosened or tightened since 1977.
