I've been thinking about doing one for a while now but haven't been able to find the time. I can't say I have any great revelations, but the biggest single thing would be "attention to detail." We're not talking nuclear physics here, but it is a little more complex than tying your shoes. You just have to pay attention, watch what you are doing and be careful. Every step of the way. Do things slowly and progressively, turning the engine regularly to make sure it still turns over nice and smooth. Used or new, you have to check every part and make sure it looks right.
