hope someone can help, need to fix today as a cracked head is last thing I want and a short roadtrip is planned later today. driving at high altitude engine started running really warm and it was about 40F outside (It did not run as hot in denver as it did in colder air once I got back). It was running between the last two lines and getting way to close to red for my comfort. Turns out after some figuring that idle and coast down mountain pass caused it to warm up, if I kept the rpm above 2500 it would stay cool. I squeezed the top radiator hose and it was easy to close until I raised rpm as well, then it filled with fluid. It had water and I believe the gauge was accurate. I opened bleed screw and got all fluid (when I bled fluid it did cause a strange but not to loud noise from the pump, kind of a squeak).

Question is can a water pump fail (quick fail as it has always been at constant temp even when idleing for long time) to pump proper pressure or is it more likely tstat not opening or am I off all together.

All thoughts and recomendations pleaded for, requested and desired, (I dont really want to just start replacing stuff and not sure how a water pump could fail like that so a bit confused). How to troubleshoot? Thank you very much.
