I finally popped out my windshield as it was cracked badly anyway so I figured I couldn't ruin it worse.
I've had a nasty rustout at driver's side lower corner. Was fearing worse.
Bad news - hole big enough to through a cat through
Good news - rest of channel looks great with no rust.
So I'll be making up the pieces tomorrow morning to weld it up. Weld-through Zinc primer on both sides. I plan on painting the entire channel with Zero Rust. I think I can finish tomorrow but I may give the Zero Rust another day to dry before installing the windshield.
I suspect paint popped of the spot weld or water got in the pinch weld. The last windshield was installed by a real hack. I didn't know any better even though I watched (1991). Not only did he not use sealant, he didn't even clean out the crumbs of the old dried sealant.
If water gets down to these compromised spot welds I think the party is over so to speak. So make sure your installed knows what they are doing.
BTW the blue book says to completely assemble the windshield and all fillers and corners, then install.
I'm taking pictures of my mad-cap adventures so maybe I'll post something
