M30 water pumps usually fail by leaking, not failing to pump. Some later cars, I think it's E36's have plastic impellers but all M30 pumps I've seen have metal ones. Anything is possible, it isn't that bad to pull the pump and a new gasket is cheap so it might be worth looking at, but don't expect to find a problem. System blockage? Collapsed lower radiator hose? I always test for a properly bled system by checking heater operation. If the heater works ok, you have water circulating. If it doesn't, that is a direction to look in.
