After much debugging my poor running E28 M5 I ordered from BMW and fitted a new AFM 2 weekends ago. Wow - the difference is night and day. Totally smooth now and better power delivery. It also idles smoother and leaner.
IMHO - anyone who has more than 150k miles or 200k km on an AFM should lever the top off and inspect the potentiometer track with a view to replacing the AFM if it isn't looking good.
