Sometime, after it has been sitting for the night

Pull the spark plugs and see if they are oil fouled. That would be consistent with the chronic valve seal problem on these M30 engines.

1) sitting overnight, oil runs past the worn seals and through open valves, fouling the plugs.
2) starting is delayed as a result
3) car runs rough until plug fouling burns off.
4) oil consumption ranges in the "quart in 500 miles, or worse"
6) Plugs get worse, with burnt oil fouling not actually clearing out.

Or, just try a new set of plugs.. If it runs better, it could be a fouling problem and will come back.

Another telltale is the resultant cloud of blue grey smoke on startup after the car sits overnight or for extended periods, allowing the oil to run into the cylinders.

Original valve seal material not very good... dries up and hardens over time.

Just one thought.
