Your description sounds like it's rich not lean. I had problems for a long time in cold weather with a bad fuel pressure regulator but it's not cold these days. On later cars, E28's I've had similar problems due to (internally) leaking injectors. If I let it set for more than a half an hour or so it acted like it was flooded (which it was due to all the gas that had leaked thru the injectors) and took a while to clean up, which is what it sounds like you are describing. Have someone else start it and sniff the exhaust and see if it smells like gas, or get them to do the dirty work while you keep it running...

If you have the electronic igniton like the US spec 528i's I would doubt it is plug fouling, it's a pretty hot ignition and should burn thru a fair amount of crap on the plug. On the other hand since the problem started all of the sudden it could be electrical or ignition.
