With all the e12's sitting in boneyards and all the engines coming out of cars for upgrades?? to 3.5L, I'd look for a good used running engine. Prices should range from $300 up, since they're not as desirable to most. Frankly, I have been extremely happy with my 80 and 81 528i's.
A good running engine out of a car with 100 to 150K, could still have a good 75 to 100K left on it if well maintained. My 81 has 335K and never unbuttoned.
I'd check out and drop a used engine in the car and keep it on the road. There should be tons of these engines available. I never have any trouble finding one when it's time.
