The reason I suggested the used engine solution is not for any purist reason, but rather to avoid all the fussing that appears to go with the 3.5L upgrade (I may get some reaction on this one). If you stay with the stock engine, you should be able to drop the replacement in with only routine transition of parts. The one point I am not quite clear on it the range of engines you can use to stay simple. I think you will need to stay with the 79, 80, and 81 engines, (which are reputed to be the best of the e12 machines). If you get an offer of a 2.8L engine from a later car, ie the 528e, I think you are dealing with a different engine.

Perhaps someone out there can confirm this.
