The pump is self priming so running dry isn't a total disaster.
I have noticed that U.S. car magazines that tested the U.S. 528i ,and other BMWs from that era,all remarked about how the fuel pump made a noticeable buzzing noise.
I haven't detected this on European e12s.Perhaps it has something to do with U.S. cars having an in tank pump in addition to the usual outside one.
