A good system has three main componants...head unit(radio/cd player, etc...) amp..(amplifies power/signal to speakers) and speakers. Always buy good quality matching componants.
The e12 is somewhat limited. I had 6"x9"'s in the rear. They were cut out. i do agree cutting is not a good idea, but i also believe that cutting a good hole will not decrease any stiffness. Always seal your speakers air tight. If you mount them in a hole...seal it...no air! It sound so much better sealed. If careful you can add 6x9's w/out cutting the vent hole/channel.
The 4x6 plates up front can sound good w/the right quality speaker. beamher bob had some 5"1/4" mounted up front w/a custom box to replace the kickpanel, but it kinda gets in the way. Sounds good, but inmo not worth it. Some e28's have a tweeter mounted in the window corner. Thats a great place for tweeters. W/a little work they can be made to fit the e12. Bob replaced his w/a 'kicker' speakers and they sound great. Nothing will make your music come together and alive like a sub-woofer. No you dont have to rattle your neighbors windows, but having a good bass will improve it so much. While driving your tires generate low frequencies and you need alot of bass to overcome them. not to mention wind noise I could go on and on but...
So...yes 6x9's work and sound good...4x6's up front(no cutting fabricating) install some tweets somewhere and add some power. High power(clean power) is important...not just to get loud, but from keeping your speakers from distortion when you do turn it up. Some head units have an intenal amp. I would recomend a good seperate amp. If you use a sub-woofer(recomened) get two amp...and crossovers. It takes up some trunk space, but in the end you will have a driving concert hall...truly an awsome sound...your music will be alive!!!!!
