Misha,
I am taking my engine block, crank, pistons, and rods along with misc stuff to the machine shop tomorrow morning to begin the rebuild process. Although I'm not planning on lightening my bottom-end at all, I will be fully balancing it and I am considering a lightweight flywheel to go with it. Frank Haas runs an 8lb flywheel on his "L" block 3.5l euro daily driver car (euro 528i with "L" block 3.5l installed). He said it is extremely quick off the line and he has had no problems.
Have you looked extensively at lightweight flywheel options? I know BMP Design sells one but it is $700 which of course is a lot of cash. I wonder if there are better deals out there.
I was planning on using the stock harmonic balancer on the engine with the lighter flywheel but I need to talk to my machinist to see if there will be any problem with this.
