"Test only" centers conduct the same exact test as "test and repair" stations. The top of the dmv renewal form will instruct you to take it to a "test only" station (if it just says take to a smog check station, then you can go to either a test only or a test and repair shop.)

If the car does not pass at a test only they can not perform repairs so you'll have to look for a smog repair facility and then the test only station will likely retest your car at no fee (1 time retest.) If you are concerned about it not passing, you can take the car first to a test and repair facility for a "pre-test." If it fails there, they can make the necessary repairs and then you should have no problems at the test only station. The technician will examine the vehicle to be sure that all standard emissions equipment is installed and functional. The k&n filter should be no problem unless it is contained in a special filter housing that does not provide connections the the crankcase ventilation stuff. If you have the carb (ca air resources board) approval information that hopefully came with the unit, bring that to the inspection.

Ain't life grand here in CA?

Good luck.

John
