528i pistons have a 2 MM, "Piano top" dome. Not much, but not flat. And they are 8.2:1. An early Bav I used to have had a pretty good dome, 6 or 8 MM, and they were 9:1. There were 9.3 and 9.5 engines along the way too (in euro cars) so they must have had a higher done.
Euro E12's are rare, I think the few I've seen have all been 520i's, so it's unlikely to have a euro engine without somebody saying something about it. Also, on my 79 at least, the serial number of the engine matched the serial number of the car, so that will tell you for sure if the engine hasn't been replaced.
