As a veteran of 8 or 9 (lost track) e12's, and another half dozen e23, e24 and e28's, my favorites have always been the e12's. Can't relate to your experience of later BMW's as BMW quit making real cars in the mid 80's and succumbed to market and political pressures and processes along with every other manufacturer in the world.
My newest car ever has been an 88 Taurus which served me well until the Chronically BAD auto trans puked. Old BMW's have character, style and have rarely let me down. But, they're cheap enough to keep a half dozen around, just in case.
