I had a similar problem.. except i was parked on the other side of the city to my home :/ It turned out to be the starter motor. Probably the thing that gave it away most was the fact that you could hear the fuel pump when i turned the key. The scary thing is the starter motor sounded perfectly fine right up until it totally stopped. We got it home after i held the ignition switch while a mate hit the starter with a spanner. Had to get the starter reconditioned and now it works fine.
