Thanks to all for the good wishes, to walk away from hitting a tree without a scratch was just amazing. I must have been a good boy of late!
Just been out and had a good look at car, cause of accident is rear left hand driveshaft from diff to wheel is broken (not in impact with tree, other side of vehicle) Assume this was the step left as it snapped and lost drive LHS all power went to RHS wheel. In the wet on off camber road I was not able to control the slide this caused as the shaft bit and broke loose repeatedly explaining the flick from side to side of the back of the car.

On the up side I'm going to look at an e28 520i this arvo at a good price and expect I might buy it and be back on the road. Will give me time to decide whether the e12 can be rebuilt or just become a parts car. Thanks again to all for the good wishes.
