They introduced the 518, along with the 1502 & 2500CS, in 1974 for the fuel crisis, but the 518 lived on until the end of the e12 range in 1981 (like the 1502 the 518 proved very popular). It was a single carb model, the 4 cyl 520 of 1972-77 had the twin Strombergs.
The 518 was originally a 4 speed manual only car, with a top speed of exactly 100 mph. A little later on, 1978 I believe, they introduced the 518 automatic. During all these years the 518 had a 1,766 cc 90 bhp engine.
The 518 continued in the e28 range during 1981-84, then was upgraded to become the 105 bhp fuel injected 518i. There was even an e34 518i using the later M40 4 cyl, but, the 518 didn't make it into the e39 range.
The e12 518 was officially available in Germany, continental Europe and some export markets like Japan & UK, but not the US or Australia.
